Advanced features: integration with Canvas

There are several advanced features and troubleshooting options available in the Canvas integration.

Create direct links to specific Digication assignments

In your Canvas course, you can provide students with direct links to specific Digication assignments. These links can be added in the following locations:

  • In a Module
  • From the Assignments Menu

Adding direct links allows students to go directly to a Digication assignment.

NOTE

  • This is an optional feature. Even if you don’t provide direct links to specific Digication assignments, you can still grade the assignments in Digication and automatically send the grades back to Canvas.

Adding direct links in a Module

First, create your assignments in Digication. You can create direct links to multiple assignments in one simple step.

  • Once your assignments are created, go to the Modules (1) area in your course.
  • Navigate to the Module (2) and click the “plus sign” (3) to add an Item.

  • In the dropdown, choose “External Tool” (4).

  • You’ll see a list of all the assignments that are in your Digication course. Select the checkbox next to the assignment(s) (8) and click “SELECT” (9), or click “Select All” (10) to create direct links for all of your Digication assignments.

  • Direct links to Digication assignments (11) will now appear in your Module.

    2726-5.png
  • To make the assignment links visible to students, publish each assignment by clicking Publish(12). The “Publish icon” will turn into a check (13) when it’s published.

View Canvas connection status

You can check the status of the Canvas connection to Digication in several places:

  1. From  “GRADE” (1), click “View Canvas connection” (2).

    2726-10.png
  • The Canvas connection window will show the “Connection Status” (3) and “Grade Sync” (4) status. From this screen, you can disconnect (5) the LMS integration, and enable/disable grade sync (6)

Edit title and maximum grade points of connected Digication assignments

When a Digication assignment is connected to Canvas through the gradebook, or as direct links in assignments or modules, the title and the maximum grade points of the Digication assignment are sent to  Canvas.

Subsequently, if either field is edited in Canvas or Digication, the title or the maximum grade points will no longer be the same across the two platforms.

  • If there is a mismatch in title or maximum grade points in one of your connected Digication assignments (1), you will see a red dot (2) in the hamburger menu for that assignment.

    2726-14.png
  • Click the hamburger menu (3) and select “VIEW CANVAS CONNECTION” (4).

    2725-15 (1).png
  • The connection screen will show that there is a mismatch (5) between the Canvas gradebook column and the Digication assignment. Click “UPDATE” (6) to sync the changes to Canvas.

    2726-16.png

NOTE

  • This connection screen will also indicate if there is a mismatch because of changes made in the Canvas gradebook, but this update is only a one-way sync (from Digication to Canvas).

Any other changes to your connected Digication assignment will need to be manually updated in Canvas. This includes grade release settings.

View grade sync history

If the assignment you are grading has the Canvas grade sync enabled, your grade should automatically be sent to Canvas after you save the grade. This may take a few seconds after you save the grade.

  • You can confirm that the grade was sent to Canvas and view the grade sync history by clicking “HISTORY” (1).

    2726-17.png
  • If the grade sync fails to send for any reason, you’ll see a red icon (2) that displays the error “Grade failed to send to Canvas” (3) in the grading area.
  • Click the “RETRY” (4) to try to send the grade to Canvas again.

    2726-18-v2.png
  • You’ll also see an error if you click HISTORY (5). You can retry sending the grade by clicking “Retry send grade to Canvas” (6) next to the error message “Grade failed to send to Canvas” (7).

Copy linked Canvas assignments

In Canvas, you have the option to copy a Canvas assignment into the same course or another course.

Copy assignment into the same course

If you copy a Canvas assignment that is linked to a Digication assignment into the same course, the copied assignment will create a duplicate grade column in the Canvas gradebook.

If this grade column duplication occurs and you grade the linked Digication assignment, the grade will be posted in both the original grade column and the duplicated grade column.

To prevent this grade column duplication, you should avoid copying any Canvas assignments that are linked to Digication assignments into the same course.

If a duplicate grade column gets created, you can delete one of the duplicate columns from the Canvas gradebook.

Canvas student view

Student view is not supported in Digication’s Canvas integration. If you access the Digication link while in student view, you will always receive an error message. This does not indicate that anything is wrong with your course connection.

Some Canvas administrators may have the ability to impersonate another user by selecting the “Act as User” option. The “Act as User” option is supported in Digication’s Canvas integration.
