What is an AI Assistant?
An AI Assistant in Digication is a reflective conversation partner that you, the instructor, configure for an assignment. It guides students through dialogue toward deeper reflection rather than handing them an answer. You set its purpose, instructions, and restrictions; students hold a back-and-forth conversation with it inside the assignment; and when they submit the assignment, the chat log becomes part of the work you review.
AI Assistants are reusable. You can create an assistant once from the Global Navigation menu and then use it in any number of assignments. If you do not see the AI Assistants option, contact your administrator or support@digication.com to enable the feature.
Where AI Assistants come from
You can use three categories of assistants:
- Assistants you create
- Assistants shared with you by other faculty in your organization
- Templates from Open AI Resources (OAIR), a community library of AI assistants
You can use any of these as-is, or add them to an assignment and customize them for your course.
Create an AI Assistant
From the Global Navigation menu, click AI Assistants (1).
Click Create assistant (2).
Use the AI-Guided Assistant Creator
Click Start (3) to open the AI-Guided Assistant Creator. This is a conversation that helps you design an assistant by describing what you want it to do.
Type a description of what the assistant should help students with. Be specific: the more detail you give, the better the suggestions will be.
Click Send (4).
The assistant responds with follow-up questions or suggestions to refine the setup. Continue the conversation to shape the assistant's behavior, tone, and focus areas.
When you are satisfied, click USE SUGGESTIONS (5). The recommended values automatically populate the Assistant Details panel on the right, including name, description, instructions, restrictions, role, and visibility. When you are done, click I'M DONE FOR NOW (6).
You can keep or adjust any of the suggested values. Each field saves automatically as you edit it; there is no save button.

Edit an AI Assistant
Click AI Assistants in the Global Navigation menu (1) to open your list of saved assistants. Use the Search bar (2) to find an assistant by name.
Click the three-dot menu on the assistant you want to edit, then click Edit (3).
The assistant opens in the AI-Guided Assistant Creator. Continue the conversation in the message field, or update any field directly in the Assistant Details panel. Changes save automatically.
Delete an AI Assistant
Important: You cannot delete an assistant that is currently associated with an assignment. Remove the assistant from the assignment first, then delete it from the AI Assistants list.
From the AI Assistants list, click the three-dot menu on the assistant you want to delete, then click Delete (in the same menu you used for Edit above).
Click YES, DELETE IT (1) to confirm. Click NO, CANCEL if you change your mind.
